1. Purpose
This policy is intended to ensure a safe, healthy and productive working environment for all employees and to protect clients, contractors and members of the public. As the Company operates within the construction industry, maintaining a drug and alcohol-free workplace is essential to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all employees of the Company, including directors, office staff and temporary employees engaged directly by the Company.
3. Policy Statement
The Company has a zero-tolerance approach to the misuse of illegal drugs and the misuse of alcohol during working hours or while representing the Company.
Employees must:
Report for work fit to perform their duties safely.
Not be under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol while working.
Not consume, possess, distribute or sell illegal drugs on Company or client premises.
Not consume alcohol during working hours unless specifically authorised for a legitimate business event.
Prescription medication that may affect an employee's ability to work safely must be disclosed confidentially to management before commencing work.
4. Testing
Where required by a client or where there is reasonable cause to believe an employee may be impaired, the Company reserves the right to request drug and/or alcohol testing in accordance with applicable law and the employee's contract of employment.
Testing may also be required:
Before placement with certain clients.
Following a workplace accident or incident.
Where permitted as part of a client's site safety requirements.
5. Employee Responsibilities
Employees are responsible for:
Reporting to work free from the effects of drugs and alcohol.
Complying with this policy.
Informing management if prescribed medication may affect their work.
Reporting any concerns regarding workplace safety relating to drugs or alcohol.
6. Disciplinary Action
Breaches of this policy may be treated as gross misconduct and could result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.
Where criminal offences are suspected, the Company may notify the police.
7. Support
Employees experiencing problems relating to drugs or alcohol are encouraged to seek assistance and discuss the matter confidentially with management before it affects their work or safety.
8. Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if legislation, client requirements or Company operations change.
